DeGrom Struggles, Offense Stalls in Loss
The New York Mets dropped the first game of their series against the San Diego Padres 5-1 on Monday night at Citi Field. Jacob deGrom started for the Mets and struggled, allowing five runs on eight hits in just four innings of work. The Mets offense was also held in check, managing just one run on five hits against Padres starter Blake Snell. The Padres took an early lead in the first inning when Ha-seong Kim hit a solo home run off deGrom. The Padres added two more runs in the second inning on an RBI single by Trent Grisham and a sacrifice fly by Jake Cronenworth. The Mets got on the board in the third inning when Brandon Nimmo singled home Mark Canha, but that would be all the offense they could muster. The Padres added two more runs in the fourth inning off deGrom on an RBI double by Manny Machado and a sacrifice fly by Juan Soto. Snell pitched five solid innings for the Padres, allowing just the one run on five hits. He struck out six batters and walked two. The Padres bullpen finished the game with four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Mets will look to even the series on Tuesday night when they send Taijuan Walker to the mound against Padres starter Joe Musgrove.
