Winter's over, so when will it be warm enough to go for a swim?
The answer depends on where you live
In the Northern Hemisphere, winter officially ends on March 20, but that doesn't mean it's warm enough to go for a swim everywhere. The water temperature in most lakes and oceans is still too cold for swimming, even in the warmest parts of the world.
For example, the average water temperature in the Mediterranean Sea in March is around 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius). That's too cold for most people to swim comfortably, even with a wetsuit.
The water temperature needs to be at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) for most people to swim comfortably.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the water temperature typically doesn't reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit until late May or early June. So, if you're planning on going for a swim in the ocean or a lake, you'll probably have to wait until then.
There are some exceptions to this rule.
There are some places in the world where the water temperature is warm enough to swim in year-round. For example, the water temperature in the Caribbean Sea is typically around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) all year long.
So, if you're really itching to go for a swim, you can always head to a warmer climate.
Here are some tips for swimming in cold water:
- Wear a wetsuit to help you stay warm.
- Swim in a group so that you can help each other out if you get into trouble.
- Don't swim for too long, and get out of the water if you start to feel cold.
